1.
ORGANISATOR
This
year, for the second time, SDT Institute
Sežana in cooperation with the Portal Community CeSDT
(Center for Screen Digital and Pad printing) and the Section for Screen, Pad
and Digital Print at the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce, supported by FESPA, will be holding a competition for students in 3D printing.
2.
PURPOSE
Main intention is to acquaint students with the new
technology of 3D scanning and 3D printing. They will be presented with an offer
to express their own creativity and knowledge through making 3D models.
This year the main topic is scanning and modelling
works of Art and Architecture.
Last year “3D Youth Model Competition 2006” with central exibition
of best 3D models on the fair FESPA in Amsterdam,
gained a lot of success among professional public and other visitors.
FESPA Digital Printing Europe, which took place from
16th to 18th May 2006 in
Amsterdam, was
a huge success, with 9.317 individual visitors attending the exhibition and
more than 234 exhibitors. In all, visitors of FESPA Digital represented over
103 different countries.
We would like to introduce new technologies to wider
printing public on upcoming Fespa fair in Berlin (2007, from 05th to 09th of June),
through creativity of the young people.
The best 3D models will be exhibited on the fair.
3. TOPIC
AND CATEGORIES
This
year the main topic is scanning and modelling works of Art and Architecture.
The
contest is divided in two categories:
1.) Making authorial artistic composition in 3D programme with 3D
scanned element
Authorial product has to contain a 3D scanned
element, which must be involved (included) into the project. Producers of scanners
or bidders of services over different states are available for consulting and
to offer technical help. Task is concluded, when the model is prepared for
implementation (solid model) – model needs to be made adequately, so it can be
printed on a 3D printer (technology of material addition).
2.) Making a copy of existent architectural building or some other 3D
works of art.
Students design a copy in any of the 3D programmes.
They can help themselves with any possible technologies (3D scanning,
photogrammetry…). We
would like to warn students, who decide for category of making copies of existent
architectural composition or some of any other 3D works of art, to inquire
about Copyrights that are valid with existent legislation. General law about
Copyrights says, that they are valid 70 years after author’s death. Therefore
we suggest to scan only art work, which are older than 70 years or inquire
about Copyrights, that are valid in their country.
4. WHO
MAY ENTER?
Any student, who educates in University or at a high
school level, who wants to improve his knowledge in area of the newest 3D technologies,
is welcome to sign up.
Students can sign up individually, in a group, or
under sponsorship of a mentor in their Faculty. In case of a group application,
selection of representative of the group is required.
Students can report more than one project (there could be more
categories) but every project must be in it`s own folder. Previous free
registration is obligatory for all competitors.
5.
REGISTRATION
Registration and collaboration
is free. The registration can be
made at www.all4print.net and is necessary for all competitors, who
wish to receive all e-notifications and full support of technical
implementation of the Contest (in cooperation with our partners), gain of a
user name and a password of our ftp server, where students stack their project
into folder. No entries will be accepted after 24.00 CET on April 20th, 2007
(Please submit your project early, in order to avoid an overload at our Mail
Servers).
6. CONTENT OF THE
FOLDER (SUBMITTED WORK)
One folder is limited to one project only. Competitors
can submit more than oneproject, but each project must be in its own folder.
The autorship and the data of the competitor must be clearly stated in the name
of the folder. Name and surname of the
student and Title of the project (example: john smith_the cube)
6.1 FILE FORMAT OF 3D MODEL
The files must be provided in STL, ZPR, PLY or VRML (full colour)
formats.
It is preferably for the file of a model, that texture is added or the
model is coloured. In this case the folder must be in VRML format.
6.2 PICTURE OF A 3D MODEL (COMPUTER SIMULATION) AND A PICTURE OF THE
ORIGINAL
At least one picture (not larger than 2Mb) of a model in a 3D programme
(computer simulation). At least one picture of original by “Copy (Imitations`)
category”. JPG format is preferably.
6.3 SHORT DESCRIPTION
Short description of the model
in English language. It must be visible from the description, in which 3D
programme the work was made and which 3D technologies helped competitors with
the implementation of the idea. In the category of copyright works (1st
category), the main idea needs to be
presented. In the category of copies (2nd category) also original work is
needed to be represented (name and surname of the author of original, year of
birth of the author of the original, year of death of author of the original if
he/she already died, name of the original work and where can original work be
found). DOC is a required format.
Folders with a 3D model,
picture in description must be submitted until 04th of May, 2007 to our ftp
server on the web portal www.all4print.net. No entries will be accepted after 24.00 CET on April
04, 2007 by 24th hour (CET).
7. MODEL
SIZE
The maximum gross volume of the model should not exceed 1000 cm3. None
of the dimensions (x, y or z) can exceed the printer working area (254 mm × 356 mm × 203 mm). The model
can also be designed in greater dimensions, but must be scaled down to the size
for submission.
8. TECHNICAL CONDITIONS OF A
MODEL
8.1 CONFINEMENT OF A MODEL
A model has to be full (solid) and have closed surfaces.
8.2 NORMALS
Normals have to be correct and not inverted.
8.3
THICKNESS OF WALLS
Walls
must be thick at least 2-3 mm,
as model before impregnation is still rather fragile. Details could be smaller if they lay alone on the
surface. Full and compact models should be hollow or gouget (Larger models should have 4 - 5 mm thickness of walls).
An example: If
we have a ball, with diameter of 10
mm, the walls
should be 5mm thick. We can drill a very small hole with diameter of 4 mm on the most imperceptible
part ob the ball, that dust can be blown out of the model. That is the way we
can spare with the weight and material.
Plugs
and holes must have a bit greater tollerance (app. 0,2 mm), because after
impregnation with adhezive and artificial resin, volume of the model slightly
increases.
8.4
COMPLEX MODELS
Some
elements of more complex models, especially architectural, should be simplified
and arranged (thicker) for print.
For example:
Shutters on windows, fences, windows, stairs, internal equipment. If some model
is made from many elements, it is proper to store away every part seperately
(due to easier rework).
We
can save up on height of the model (time of printing), and also, putting
together the elements is more difficult.
For example:
Models of nuts and screws are saved in seperated folders.
We
open them seperately and set in the programme of 3D printer that they lie
together and occupy the lowest height together. Finally we coil nut on screw.
9. JUDGING
9.1 THE FIRST PHASE:
The First Phase takes place through the online voting system. Each is eligible to vote
for the top Ten Entries from each of the Two Categories, together 20 models.
9.2 THE SECOND PHASE
The Second Phase: Professional committee consisted of experts in technically and
artistically supported fields, will choose at least three best models from each
group among ten of the selected models from the First Phase. Together there will be selected at least
six models.
Each work will be introduced on
our web portal. Participants of the contest will be notified about results of
voting via e-mail. At least six most valid works/models will be printed on 3D
printer and exhibited on the fair FESPA in Berlin from 05th to 09th of June 2007.
10. CRITERIA OF JUDGING
1. Innovation
2. Representation of 3D technologies
3. Level of technical difficulty
4. Colour textures (if they make
sense)
11. ANONYMITY
Names and nationalities of students, who participate at
the Student Contest 2007, and names of their Univerities and Schools, stay
confidential to the end of the final selection of Proffessional Committee. The
final selection of Proffessional Committee is irreversible.
12. REFUND OF ARTICLES
Project models (with 3D folder, description and pictures) and sent data
become a property of the SDT Institute and its partners, if the SDT Institute allows,
and are not returned to participants of the Contest. Printed 3D models (except
those, which got winners as an award), picture of 3D models (computer
simulation), pictures of originals and descriptions of ideas, become a property
of the SDT Institute and its partners, if SDT Institute permits to.
13. PROTECTION OF PERSONAL DATA
Personal
data of participants of Contest will be used exclusively for the intentions,
connected to the Contest. Participants permit to use the data also to aims,
